The paper tries to highlight the role of Jyotiba Phule as the pioneer of the Social Reforms in India. Jyotiba Phule concentrated on the unjust caste system prevelant through ages. He carried out the anti-brahmin movement mainly in Maharashtra with his book Gulam-Giri (1872) and his organisation the Satyashodhak Samaj founded in 1873. He persistently worked for the eradication of the Caste system. He put forward logical arguements to prove that the occupational castes were not meant to be hereditary. The works of Jyotiba Phule was later had its impact on the thinking of Dr. Ambedkar who laid special provisions to eradicate untouchability.
