The article primarily analyses the topic of exonyms and Croatian exonyms from a lexicographic perspective. The previous catalogues of Croatian names for foreign toponyms are listed, as well as the criteria according to which they were processed, with the special emphasis on the publication Croatian exonyms I and II (Hrvatski egzonimi I., II.) of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, together with their online editions, where the basic perspective on exonyms is geographical. The possibilities of their descriptions from the linguistic-lexicographic starting point and the methods of their processing in (previous) general language dictionaries are presented. The aim of the paper is to examine the possibility of creating a dictionary of exonyms that would (possibly) include foreign proper names. This dictionary would only be partially preceded, or followed, by an online edition with one of its functions including users’ participation in the constant monitoring of contemporary linguistic reality, the improvement, and supplementation of name lists and their processing.
