ABSTRACT Corneal curvature measurements at different periods of time after the removal of contact lenses have been analyzed. A specific pattern of changes in over 100 eyes showed progressive corneal flattening of both the vertical and horizontal meridians for one and three days, respectively, followed by corneal steepening to the 48th day of the test period. The mean vertical change at one day was 0.60 D flatter: horizontal at three days was 1.01 D flatter. Mean astigmatism variations were increases in with the rule astigmatism from 0 to 3 days. The extent and duration of corneal curvature changes were found to be directly related to the number of years contact lenses had been worn. The variations were smaller for individuals who wore contact lenses less than all waking hours.
