Understanding sex- and hormone-specific mechanisms underlying substance use disorders (SUDs) has become an increasingly essential topic in addiction research and treatment. The prevalence of illicit drug or alcohol use is generally higher in men than in women ( 1 ). However, as this gap appears to be narrowing over recent years e.g., for alcohol consumption ( 2 ) and women are still underrepresented regarding treatment ( 1 ), there is an urgent need for scientific research that not only addresses underlying mechanisms but also informs treatment options.
