This work examines the conceptual role of the Bill of Materials (BOM) within operational traceability systems in lot-based production environments. While the BOM is traditionally treated as a planning artifact in MRP and ERP systems, this article argues that its deeper function is structural rather than merely calculative: it defines the valid transformation relationships through which products and production lots can coherently emerge. The paper distinguishes between three analytically separable dimensions frequently conflated in practice: Technical structure – the BOM as a formal definition of input–output relationships. Operational evidence – transformation events that consume and generate identifiable lots. Analytical reconstruction – the capability to reconstruct causal production histories from recorded events. Traceability is framed as an event-driven phenomenon. Structures alone do not generate traceability; only recorded physical events do. However, without a coherent structural reference, event recording becomes ambiguous. The BOM provides ontological constraints that reduce interpretive inconsistency while remaining distinct from empirical execution. A minimal conceptual chaining is proposed:BOM → Transformation Event → Resulting Lot → Track (recorded evidence) → Trace (causal reconstruction). The contribution of this work is conceptual rather than technological. It does not prescribe specific software architectures, RFID schemes, blockchain implementations, or database models. Instead, it clarifies the structural ordering required for defensible reconstruction in operational traceability systems, particularly in regulated environments where lot boundaries, recall precision, and causal accountability are critical. By differentiating structure, empirical occurrence, and reconstruction, this article strengthens theoretical coherence in traceability discourse and situates the BOM as a transformation structure foundational to lot-based traceability systems.
