Using an embedded researcher and coproduction approach to mobilise research into policy and practice: findings from an evaluation of an integrated homelessness service in Doncaster, UK Submitted to Public Health Science Conference

Homelessness creates major health and social challenges and requires coordinated action across systems. This evaluation examined an integrated housing and health service in Doncaster that supports people with complex needs and aims to prevent ongoing homelessness. A mixed methods design was used that included interviews with clients and professionals, more than thirty hours of observation, analysis of routine service data, and workshops to coproduce recommendations. The study was supported by an embedded researcher to help translate learning into practice. Findings show that the service helped clients sustain accommodation by improving access to essential support such as GPs, dentists, addiction services, and help with debt. Its flexible and person centred approach was viewed as central to its effectiveness. Challenges included difficulties accessing health services, limited appropriate housing, barriers to multidisciplinary working, and stigma within some council and health settings. The evaluation highlights the importance of addressing the wider factors that influence homelessness. Although the service plays a vital role within the local system, it depends on consistent involvement from health and strategic partners to achieve lasting impact.
