Challenges and Opportunities for Business in Post-Conflict African States: An Analytical Framework

Post-conflict African states face unique challenges in economic recovery, particularly in sectors like business development where stability and governance are critical. The analysis is based on an interpretive review of existing literature and case studies from post-conflict regions, supplemented by expert interviews to provide insights into business practices and regulatory frameworks. A key finding is the significant role that effective governance structures play in enabling businesses to thrive in these challenging conditions, with a notable instance where local governments implemented streamlined tax procedures which reduced bureaucratic hurdles for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Businesses require tailored regulatory support alongside improved governance infrastructure to navigate the complexities of post-conflict environments effectively. Developing comprehensive business support programmes, enhancing cross-sectoral collaboration, and promoting transparency in government operations are recommended strategies for fostering a conducive business climate.
