Urbanization in South Africa is a significant phenomenon, particularly evident in its rapid growth of informal settlements that house over 40% of the urban population. Theoretical development will be employed through literature review and qualitative analysis to identify key factors influencing urbanization and social welfare outcomes. The theoretical framework will provide policymakers and urban planners with insights into how different social welfare mechanisms can be tailored to address the unique challenges faced by informal settlements. Policymakers should consider implementing targeted social welfare programmes that cater specifically to the needs of informal settlement residents, recognising their distinct vulnerabilities.
