This study explores how indigenous knowledge systems have influenced legal practices in South Africa, a country with a rich history of blending traditional and modern legal frameworks. A mixed methods approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with legal practitioners and quantitative analysis of case law to uncover the extent and nature of indigenous knowledge systems in South African jurisprudence. Findings suggest that indigenous knowledge systems significantly influence decision-making processes in at least 40% of cases reviewed. Themes identified include traditional healing practices, ancestral wisdom, and cultural norms impacting legal outcomes. The conclusion is that while formal legal education tends to downplay indigenous influences, they are deeply embedded in South African law through various practical applications. Legal educators should be encouraged to incorporate indigenous knowledge systems into their curricula, thereby fostering a more comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape in South Africa.
