Traditional medicine plays a significant role in contemporary Liberian healthcare systems, reflecting broader patterns of traditional health practices across Africa. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with policymakers and stakeholders and an analysis of existing legislation on traditional medicine in Liberia. Traditional healers in Liberia constitute approximately 40% of the healthcare workforce, contributing significantly to rural health services where formal facilities are scarce. The findings underscore the need for a holistic policy that acknowledges both traditional and modern healthcare systems to ensure comprehensive access to care. Policy recommendations include developing guidelines for training and certification, along with incentives for traditional healers to collaborate with government health programmes.
