The article examines the tension between ethics and law in the context of environmental protection. It combines Pope Francis’s refl ections from Laudate Deum and Laudato si’ – which condemn environmental degradation as a sin – with an analysis of environmental crimes under the Polish and EU criminal law. It discusses legislative changes, such as the EU Directive 2024/1203 and the amendments to the Polish Penal Code. The article shows how public conscience inspires legal reform and highlights the need for cooperation between ethics and law in protecting the Earth.
