Archaeological evaluation (six trial-trenches) carried out as specified in the project brief and wsi. An archaeological evaluation (six trial-trenches) was carried out on land to the west of Thaxted Road, Debden, Essex, in advance of a new residential development. The site is located immediately south-east of Debden, a medieval village that is centred on the Church of St Mary and All Saints. The evaluation revealed five ditches and three pits, five of which produced sherds of medieval pottery dating from the 11th to the 13th century alongside fragments of animal bone and a piece of lava quern suggesting habitation either on or close to the development site.
