Technical skills play a crucial role in football performance, influencing both individual effectiveness and overall team success. This explorative study examined the interrelationships among several commonly assessed technical skills in football. Specifically, correlations between eight distinct performance tasks were analyzed to determine whether these skills develop independently or share common underlying components. Twenty-three professional male players completed eight technical skill tasks from the Test of Technical Skills in Football (TTSF). The mean age of the participants was 20.56 years (SD = 4.37), with ages ranging from 16 to 32 years. The assessed skills included juggling, 25-m passing, heading, kicking, dribbling, precision corner kicking, precision shooting, and wall-volley performance. All players were members of the same elite Icelandic club, ensuring consistent training backgrounds and competitive experience. Pearson correlations between the eight skill measures were generally low and non-significant, indicating minimal overlap in performance across tasks. The findings of this exploratory study reinforce the specificity of motor skills hypothesis, demonstrating that technical skills in football are largely discrete and necessitate targeted, skill-specific training. Enhancements in one technical domain do not inherently transfer to others, highlighting the necessity for deliberate and differentiated practice approaches. Consequently, these results present substantial practical and theoretical implications for coaches, practitioners, and researchers committed to optimising player development and training methodology. By customising practice sessions to focus on individual technical elements, professionals can facilitate more effective skill acquisition and elevate overall performance levels.
