Abstract This essay re/turns to Tagore to read him as a utopian writer in these dystopian times. It examines his critique of parochial nationalism and utopian formulation of national belonging by focusing on his novels Ghare Bāire ঘরে বাইরে (1915; English translation, The Home and the World, 1919) and Gora গোরা (1909), in addition to a selection of his poems. In illuminating Tagore's utopianism, the essay suggests that his works remain resources of hope for our present.
