The unknown work by Domenico Cini, "Osservazioni storiche sopra l’antico stato della montagna pistoiese con un discorso sopra l’origine di Pistoia" (1737), is one of the best examples of scientific prose at a significant stage in the development of science, defined by the activities of erudites. People like Domenico Cini, often living in small towns and not striving to leave their homeland, laid the foundation for classical studies as a historical discipline; their observations and conclusions became the basis for modern science, often taken for granted and not requiring proof. However, as scientific inquiry continues, periodic verification of the foundations upon which accepted concepts are built becomes necessary. This article analyzes the first volume of "Osservazioni storiche," where Domenico Cini addresses the history of the Roman Republic. The specificity of the source base at Cini's disposal is examined, as well as the main messages of the work; the structure of the composition and the conclusions drawn by the erudite are characterized. The author of the article employs general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, comparative-historical and typological methods, as well as terminological and lexical analysis. The remarkable work devoted to the history of an important region, extremely poorly covered by Greek-Roman tradition and actively studied by contemporary archaeological and geoarchaeological methods, is introduced into scientific discourse. Based on information about significant historical events and armed with logic, drawing on minor and disparate material evidence, the erudite managed to write a fairly detailed history of the northern Tuscan foothills. Key episodes highlighted include Etruscan colonization, Hannibal's crossing into Italy, the final phase of Catiline's conspiracy, and the founding of the city of Pistoia. The work of Domenico Cini is highly regarded: his judiciousness, acute observational skills, and good knowledge of ancient writers and the specifics of his region, which is often lacking among residents of capital cities, are commendable. At the same time, attention is drawn to the inevitable limitations of his arguments, particularly concerning the localization of the site of the "battle of Pistoia."
