University Engagement in Knowledge Production and Dissemination in Uganda: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry

The role of African universities in knowledge production and dissemination is increasingly recognised as crucial for socio-economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. The research employs both qualitative interviews with university faculty and administrators, as well as quantitative surveys among students and public policy makers. Data analysis includes thematic coding for qualitative data and statistical tests for quantitative results. University engagement in knowledge production is characterized by a notable emphasis on agricultural science (45% of respondents) and health sciences (30%), with less focus on social sciences and humanities. Ugandan universities play a significant role in producing specialized knowledge, though their distribution across disciplines needs improvement for broader societal impact. Universities should diversify research areas to better serve the diverse needs of Ugandan society and policy-making processes.
