The scientific debate on the regeneration of historic centers has recently been enriched by the reflections and critical analyses conducted by the HUL (Historical Urban Landscape) approach. New strategies for the recovery and regeneration of historic centers make use of advanced tools/practices in line with HUL principles, which recognize the community as the guardian and active agent of the historic landscape. For the planning of historic centers, which are also characterized by a vast archaeological heritage, it is necessary to provide flexible and appropriately dedicated tools, such as Historical GIS (HGIS), capable of critically archiving cartography, images, documents, and analytical data sheets in order to develop a targeted interpretation aimed at enhancing their resources. The document describes the experience of the Municipal Plan and the Recovery Plan for the Historic Center of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, together with some applied research on the use of digital tools (HGIS, AR, VR, DST) to promote awareness of heritage in the local community, as innovative planning for historic centers.
