Description: This paper is the American-history application in the Self-as-an-End theory series, forming a "multi-line scan / single-line deep drill" symmetry with the four-volume Civilization History series. Using the six structural patterns identified in the Civilization History series, it conducts a deep drill into the American line (c. 1776–1971) as the "fourth line" previewed in the Patterns Volume's open questions. The central hypothesis is that the United States constitutes a fourth topology: institutional layer → individual layer transmission strongest, with a planarized relational layer (vertical dimension extremely weak, horizontal dimension once strong but trending toward dissolution). Judicial review is identified as the core transmission device. Termination at 1971 (dollar-gold decoupling) marks the removal of the last explicit external constraint on the institutional layer. Three corrections to the Civilization History patterns are proposed: explicit contraction mechanisms can decelerate but not halt institutional expansion (Pattern 1); the individual layer can be protected by advance institutional design without requiring the collapse-vacuum path (Pattern 3); and a fourth topology is identified (Pattern 5). Originally written in Chinese; the English version is a rewrite, not a translation. Keywords: Self-as-an-End, American institutional history, three-layer structure, fourth topology, judicial review, colonization, cultivation, institutional expansion, relational layer planarization, slavery, Reconstruction, Progressive Era, New Deal, Bretton Woods, gold standard, 1971 decoupling License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) Resource type: Preprint Language: Multiple languages (Chinese original + English rewrite) Related identifiers: DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18727327 (is supplemented by this upload) — Paper 3: The Complete Self-as-an-End Framework DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898186 (is supplemented by this upload) — Civilization History Volume I: Ancient DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898226 (is supplemented by this upload) — Civilization History Volume II: Medieval DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898257 (is supplemented by this upload) — Civilization History Volume III: Modern DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18898263 (is supplemented by this upload) — Civilization History Volume IV: Patterns
