Environmental Justice Movements in Resource-Rich African Nations: A Mixed Methods Inquiry into Kenya's Context

Environmental justice movements have emerged as significant actors in addressing environmental degradation and climate change impacts, particularly in resource-rich regions of Africa. In Kenya, these movements are increasingly mobilizing to advocate for equitable access to natural resources and sustainable development. This study adopts a mixed methods approach combining qualitative interviews with semi-structured questionnaires to gather detailed insights from activists, policymakers, and community members. Quantitative data is analysed using thematic coding and content analysis techniques. Findings indicate that environmental justice movements in Kenya have successfully influenced the adoption of more equitable resource allocation policies, particularly concerning water management reforms. For instance, a significant proportion (45%) of respondents reported successful advocacy leading to policy changes favoring community rights over natural resources. The mixed methods study underscores the pivotal role of environmental justice movements in fostering inclusive and sustainable development frameworks in Kenya. Recommendations focus on strengthening movement coordination for broader impact and enhancing stakeholder engagement in resource governance. Recommendations include developing collaborative platforms among environmental justice groups, integrating community feedback into policy-making processes, and increasing public awareness about the importance of equitable resource access.
