Abstract: In this short and speculative piece, the author notes that literary critics are often mistaken when they point to examples of Free Indirect Discourse and suggests that the problem might be illuminated (though not solved) by considering Bertrand Russell's influence on accounts of FID by Ann Banfield and Frances Ferguson.
