Solar lighting technologies have been introduced to rural communities in Uganda as a means of improving energy access and reducing reliance on traditional sources such as kerosene lamps, which are expensive and pose safety risks. A mixed-methods approach combining surveys, interviews, and focus groups was employed to gather data from participants across different socio-economic backgrounds in selected rural areas. While solar lighting offers substantial economic benefits and is well-received by communities, further efforts are needed to address initial high costs and ensure widespread adoption, particularly in more remote areas. Governments should consider subsidizing or providing grants for solar technology purchases. Community-led initiatives can also play a crucial role in promoting awareness and use of these technologies.
