Abstract This article describes Christian nationalism as it has developed in the United States, including its prevalence, and its central tenets; the psychology of Christian nationalism and its appeal, including both conscious and unconscious motivations with an empahsis on unconscious group psychology citing Freud; the current threat posed by Christian nationalism and an appeal to scholars and practitioners of practical theology to resist its dangerous spread within American Christianity and analogous global movements.
