Presentation by Dr Samantha Pearman-Kanza on "The FAIR Quest: You Can't Shortcut Your Way Through the Data Castle" for the Royal Society of Chemistry Analyticode Conference Abstract: FAIR data is often approached as a box ticking exercise, or something that digital tools such as Electronic Lab Notebooks can enable automatically. But data cannot be magically transformed into FAIR data at the end of a project, and no tool can compensate for data that was poorly planned or inconsistently captured. True FAIR data begins at the creation stage, through clear and structured data capture and the correct implementation and use of digital tools. This talk will delve into the complexities of FAIR, including the need for good data stewardship to deliver high quality data, and explore how digital tools such as ELNs can be implemented in way that encourages the production of FAIRer data.
