ABSTRACT The academic direction taken by optometry in its educational development has. in some respects, served to negate its attempts to achieve recognition as a primary health care profession. Recent trends have been to follow the pattern set by other health professions and go on for advanced postgraduate training to a non‐professional college for academic degrees. Current M.P.H. degrees vary in length and practicability. These programs will be reviewed and recommendations made for the development of residency programs in optometric epidemiology and public health.
