The expanding availability and popularity of spreadsheet software have resulted in its incorporation into academic and industrial laboratory practice. A novel application of spreadsheet software for the organic chemistry laboratory course is described. The primary objective of the exercise is to review the collection and interpretation of infrared (IR) spectra. The use of spreadsheet software to accomplish this task makes it a “value-added” exercise.
