Anders Ackfeldt’s Islamic Themes in US Hip-Hop Culture represents yetanother welcome example of the increasing scholarly attention beingpaid to the representation of Islam in popular culture. Combining hisexpertise in the history of religions and Islamic Studies with a rangeof tools stemming from Media Studies and social semiotics, Ackfeldtproduces a multi-layered investigation into the Islamic symbolism andMuslim identities in U.S. hip-hop. Ackfeldt’s book portrays the religionas a creative resource for the articulation of social, cultural, and politicalexpressions, especially among Black American artists.
