Ayurvedic Management of Khalitya (Hair Loss) With Dandruff and Itching – A Single Case Study

Background: Khalitya (hair loss) is a Pitta-dominant Tridoshaja Vyadhi described in Ayurveda under Kshudra Roga and Shiroroga 1–3. Increasing prevalence among young adults is attributed to lifestyle stress, dietary indiscretions, and excessive cosmetic use. Modern management often provides temporary relief. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Ayurvedic oral and external formulations in the management of Khalitya associated with dandruff (Darunaka) and scalp itching (Keshabhoomi Kandu). Methods: A 22-year-old female patient suffering from hair fall with itching and dandruff for 9 months was treated with classical Ayurvedic formulations for 4 months. Assessment was done using subjective grading scales, hair pull test, and photographic documentation. Results: Significant reduction in hair fall, itching, and dandruff was observed with improvement in hair density and scalp health. No adverse effects were noted. Conclusion: The present case study suggests that Ayurvedic management is effective and safe in Khalitya, even in patients not responding to conventional therapy.
