This article assesses the impact of the state border on the spatial development of the Russian Far East from the second half of the XIX to the early XXI centuries. The dynamics of this impact are revealed through a comparative analysis of the periodization of border regimes and changing trends in population distribution between the border and internal territories of the macroregion. It is concluded that a "from border" model of development emerged in the 1860s–1890s in the Russian Far East, in which border territories, as relay stations for transborder and state resource flows, played the role of the macroregion’s spatial core.
