Introduction. One definition of health literacy describesit as the ability to access, understand, andevaluate health information with the aim of preservingand improving health. Limited health literacyrepresents a significant but unequal burden in differentparts of the world. The results of many previousstudies have found that older age, lower educationlevel, and poor socioeconomic status significantlycontribute to lower health literacy.Aim. The objectives of this study were to examinehealth literacy among hospitalized patients, investigatedifferences in health literacy according to sociodemographicvariables, and identify sociodemographicpredictors of health literacy.Methods. The research was conducted as a crosssectionalstudy. The study included adult hospitalizedpatients in the Požega General County Hospitalin the period from July to October 2020. The criteriafor inclusion in the study were as follows: respondentsolder than 18 years of age, respondents hospitalizedin hospital wards, respondents who speakand understand the Croatian language, respondentsvoluntarily participating in the study.A questionnaire containing demographic data wasused as a research instrument, while the second researchinstrument was the Croatian version of theSAHLCA-50 functional health literacy test. A healthilliterate person is one who had 42 or fewer correctanswers.
