Japanese Budo (martial arts) have long been seen as cultural icons and exports and continue to gain interest and support globally.In this study, the author examines how a Japanese Budo class taught at a Japanese university can act as a catalyst for intercultural understanding.The participants are 79 international exchange students who have taken the class to date.A thematical analysis of student participant reflections is used to discuss the intercultural related benefits of teaching the history, culture and philosophy of Budo.It concludes by explaining how an experiential approach to course design contributes to students grasping Japanese Budo culture and philosophy better and what that means moving forward.
