In July 2007 ARCUS were commissioned by Leslie Clark Construction Consultants, on behalf of Simons Developments Limited, to carry out archaeological evaluation trenching in Wakefield City Centre as part of the redevelopment programme. During two stages of archaeological evaluation, a total of eight trenches were excavated to identify and record any survived archaeology. Trenches 1, 2 and 3, located on the former bus station site, produced evidence of 19t h-century housing and industrial units, along with the earlier remains of ancillary properties. In Trench 6, located behind the former Tut and Shive Public House, stabling was recorded within the yard of the property. Trenches 7, 8 and 9 were located in Frederick Street car park, where evidence of former malt kilns and an associated building were recorded.
