No evidence has yet been found to bridge the 800-year gap between Constantinian occupation and the motte-and-bailey castle of 1090. Excavations at several sites on the line of the defences are described and discussed in terms of Abergavenny's murage grants of 13th and 14th centuries, its street plan and the defences of other Welsh towns. A layout for the 12th century town is postulated for future testing. Appended are reports on coins, metal, bone and stone objects, pottery (12th century to post-medieval), ridge tiles and clay pipes.
