A Study of Ahilyadevi Holkar’s Contributions towards Socio-Economic Development & Its Future Use Prof. Sandhya Sharadchandra Katkam Hirachand Nemachand College of Commerce (Autonomous), Solapur Abstract Ahilyadevi Holkar (1725–1795), the ruler of the Malwa region, represents a distinguished model of progressive governance in Indian history. Her administration was rooted in justice, welfare, religious tolerance, and sustainable development. She ensured impartial justice accessible to all, irrespective of caste or gender, while promoting ethical conduct and safeguarding women’s rights. Her contributions to cultural and social infrastructure such as temples, ghats, dharamshalas, and wells across sacred sites like Kashi, Somnath, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram strengthened national integration and social harmony. Economically, she reduced excessive taxation, supported agriculture through land and irrigation facilities, and enhanced trade by securing routes and developing marketplaces and roads. In the contemporary context, socio-economic development refers to holistic progress combining economic growth with social well-being. It encompasses improved living standards, education, healthcare, equity, and sustainability, driven by industrialization, technology, and responsible resource management. Keywords: Ahilyadevi Holkar, Socio-Economic Development, Women Leadership, Good Governance, Sustainable Development, Cultural Heritage, Inclusive Growth
