An archaeological evaluation of land to the west of Whittington Farm, Atherstone, Warwickshire was carried out on behalf of Mr Philip Blackman of Stratford Land Ltd in support of a planning application in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation approved by North Warwickshire Borough Council. The work was carried out in accordance with The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Standards and guidance for archaeological field evaluation (CIfA 2020). This report describes the results obtained in 29 trial trenches (no's 1 - 29). A single potentially significant archaeological feature was identified. This was a ditch which contained medieval pottery (1250-1300AD). It may relate to one of a pair of parallel linear features, the other containing 18th/19th century pottery. However, the low incidence of medieval pottery across the site suggests that the associated domestic foci was outside the area examined. Other features recorded included undated gullies of uncertain function or furrows of no obvious archaeological interest. The furrows visible in the majority of the trenches contained later medieval and earlier post-medieval pottery.
