The Watching Brief involved the monitoring of all ground reduction necessitated by the development. Machine excavation was conducted in shallow units/spits where possible and ceased on the first significant archaeological horizon or subsoil. This was achieved using a flat-bladed ditching bucket. The Watching Brief was undertaken according to AOC Archaeology Group's standard operating procedures as detailed with the Written Scheme of Investigation (AOC 2022 There was a concentration of archaeological features discovered in the west of the watching brief area. This included the likely remains of a 18th-19th century pumphouse, in particular the remains of a potential wall foundation cut and potentially related stone culvert. These features are truncated by a 19th century clay field drain. All of these features are in turn truncated by the construction of the garden wall of 82 Dalkieth Road There were no further features of archaeological significance identified. The construction of the garage extension to 82 Dalkieth Road having most likely disturbed any underlying archaeology during it's construction.
