AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching at King George's Field, near the intersection of the A19 and the A194, in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, ahead of a proposed development of the site. The evaluation followed a geophysical survey of the site which indicated the presence of plough lines, a possible field boundary and additional linear anomalies. Three evaluation trenches were excavated across the proposed development area. The truncated remains of three probable furrows were identified in Trench 3, and late post-medieval ceramic land drains were recorded in all the trenches. The furrows align approximately with some of the geophysical anomalies that were interpreted as plough lines. The land drains may be responsible for some of the additional linear anomalies. Some fragments of unstratified late post-medieval pottery, and CBM from the topsoil were noted but not retained.
