An archaeological watching brief was required during site clearance and excavation works to protect the archaeological and historical interest of the site. The development area was approximately 690 m2 in total. An archaeologist supervised digging by a mechanical excavator fitted with a c.2m-wide straight-edged bucket in order to establish the presence or absence of archaeological remains within the site. The site was seen to have been extensively terraced, which had removed over a metre of material at the northern end of the site and circa 0.3 metres towards the southern end. This meant the area monitored was relatively undisturbed. No significant archaeological features and/or deposits were encountered during the watching brief. As such, no further archaeological work is proposed in relation to the development area.
