Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in employee selection to support and improve recruitment decisions. Organizations now apply tools such as automated résumé screening, predictive analytics, digital assessments, and AI-based interview analysis to make hiring processes faster and more efficient. However, concerns remain about the accuracy, fairness, transparency, and legal implications of these systems. This review article brings together research from human resource management, industrial and organizational psychology, computer science, and employment law to examine both the benefits and challenges of AI in hiring. It discusses evidence on effectiveness and efficiency, while also addressing issues such as algorithmic bias, discrimination risks, data privacy, applicant perceptions, and ethical governance. The review highlights the importance of maintaining human oversight and accountability when using AI in recruitment. Finally, it identifies gaps in current knowledge and suggests directions for future research to support responsible and balanced use of AI in personnel selection.
