In 2008, ARCUS was commissioned by Dunstans Estate Agents Ltd on behalf of Mr Jim Bower (deceased) to undertake an archaeological evaluation of land to the rear of 24- 34 Church Street, Swinton A series of seven trenches were distributed around the site to evaluate the sub-surface deposits and archaeology present within the site boundaries. Despite the medieval history of the settlement, no archaeological features were exposed by the trial trenches. Several Medieval types of pottery were recovered from topsoil and subsoil contexts, such as Coal Measures Purple ware (15th-16th century), Lincolnshire Coastal type ware (c. 1050-c. 1250 AD) and Coal Measures Whiteware (14th-15th century). Additional ceramic types dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were recovered from the same topsoil and subsoil contexts. The mixture of Medieval pottery with later types in the subsoil and topsoil suggests a residual medieval presence in the area.
