Slinter Mining Co. Ltd are proposing to extend their Quarry at Tearsall, Bonsall Moor, Derbyshire. As part of there planning application an Environmental Assessment Report was undertaken. ARCUS were appointed by Glentoal Associates Ltd, Slinter Mining Co. Ltd. agents, to undertake an initial desk-top study and walkover survey on the archaeology of the site. The desk-top study and walk-over survey are designed to provide information on which the impact of the proposed quarry development on the archaeology and cultural heritage of the area can be judged. The desk-top study examined the Derbyshire County Council Sites and Monuments Records and County Records Office for all archaeological sites or sites of cultural heritage known to exist within a search area of lkm radius around the site. A walk- over survey was undertaken over the area of the proposed quarry extension and all archaeological features in the landscape were recorded. The desk-top study and walk-over survey identified several archaeological features in and around the site. These range in date from the Neolithic period to the post-medieval period. They included prehistoric flints, a Romano-British enclosure complex and many post-medieval remains. The most numerous and important of the archaeological sites identified were the remains of post-medieval lead mining. Two of the mining sites Mount Pleasant and Northern Dale, outside the proposed development area but within search area, are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. These will be visually impacted by the development which will also destroy other mining remains within the proposed development site.
