Two trenches machine excavated in the Phase 3 area of the site. Recorded in section and plan. The natural was sand and gravel at 0.63m OD, sealed by alluvial clay at 1.19m OD. Above the clay, a dark-coloured organic deposit was recorded at 1.58m OD. This formed a distinctive horizon, associated with agricultural activity on the site prior to the urban development of the area in the mid-19th century; post-medieval pottery sherds recovered from this layer were dated. A timber- and- brick raft recorded in TR3b might be associated with market gardening. Later structures illustrated the late 19th and early 20th century; these included: a, a stepped brick foundation, a concrete pad and an iron post - all representing either the terraced housing of 1870s or a school building of c 1896. One environmental sample (10l) was collected during the evaluation.
