Evaluation at 34-36 Sutton Road, London Borough of Newham, London, Greater London, England

The archaeological trial trench evaluation comprised the excavation of four trenches measuring 10m in length by 1.8m in width, and two trenches measuring 5m in length by 1.8m in width, across the proposed development area that measured 0.19ha, representing a 5% sample of the overall site. The archaeological work was undertaken over 8 days between the 18th and 27th January 2021 and comprised the excavation of six trenches. The investigation revealed a single undated drainage ditch, the fill of which produced a single fragment of worked flint, which was likely to be residual. It was established that a combination of construction and subsequent remediation of recently demolished buildings had removed any previously surviving structural remains relating to an earlier 20th century row of terraces formerly fronting Sutton Road until the 1970s
