Archaeological Watching Brief at Land to the Rear of 34, Lodge Drive, Belper, Derbyshire.

ARCUS were commissioned by Mr. Stephen Cavers to conduct an archaeological watching brief during groundworks in preparation for construction of a detached house to the rear of 34 Lodge Drive, Belper, Derbyshire. Structural footings of a substantial building were encountered, dating to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. This building is likely to have been used for animal housing, with a corridor running across the front of the building, and the rear part of the building subdivided into pens. Evidence for further subdivision into stalls was noted in one of these rooms. It is likely that these buildings were associated with Bridge Hill House, constructed by William Strutt by 1794, and demolished in the 1930s.
