Academic libraries play a vital role in supporting teaching, learning, and research activities in higher educational institutions. In recent years, the rapid advancement of digital technologies has significantly transformed the traditional functions and services of academic libraries. The concept of digital transformation refers to the integration of modern information and communication technologies into library operations, enabling libraries to provide efficient, accessible, and user-centered services. This study examines the digital transformation of academic libraries in India, focusing on the opportunities and challenges associated with the adoption of digital technologies. The study highlights the evolution of academic libraries from traditional print-based systems to modern digital environments supported by information and communication technology infrastructure. It also discusses key components of digital transformation, including digital collections, electronic databases, online catalogues, and institutional repositories that facilitate wider access to scholarly information. Furthermore, the paper explores the opportunities created by digital transformation, such as enhanced access to information resources, improved research support, and increased academic collaboration. At the same time, several challenges such as limited technological infrastructure, financial constraints, shortage of skilled professionals, and issues related to copyright and digital access are also examined. The study concludes that strategic planning, investment in digital infrastructure, and continuous professional development are essential for the successful digital transformation of academic libraries in India.
