Modern software development generates vast amounts of interconnected artifacts — requirements, source code, test cases, defects, deployment records — yet most Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools organize these artifacts chronologically around events rather than around the functional units they describe. This paper introduces SOM (Software Object Model / Software Object Material), a program-centric traceability framework inspired by the Bill of Materials (BOM) concept from manufacturing.
