The article examines the work of the renowned Argentine writer of the 20th century, J. L. Borges, in the context of understanding philosophical problems of time and human destiny. The subject of the study is the interrelationship of the concept of fate in Borges's works with the writer's philosophical ideas in the fields of metaphysics and anthropology. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the influence of ideas from ancient philosophy as well as philosophical and scientific discoveries of the 20th century on Borges's work in relation to the writer's exploration of the theme of fate. This goal is achieved through the resolution of the following tasks: the analysis of the concept of time, on which he bases his artistic reality; the justification of the influence of philosophical hermeneutics on Borges's works; the investigation and identification of cultural myths related to the theme of time and fate in his creations. The method of research employed is hermeneutics, which allows for the reconstruction of the author's worldview through text analysis. It should also be noted that turning to Borges's creative legacy, which includes not only artistic texts but also numerous lectures, journalism, and philosophical reflections, helps avoid subjectivity and arbitrariness in interpretations. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the following. It shows how the change in worldview paradigms in 20th-century philosophy and science has reflected in the writer's work and his concept of fate. The meaning of cultural images and myths, through which Borges reveals his own understanding of fate, has been reconstructed. Furthermore, it has been established that in Borges's works, fate is considered not so much as an ethical category but rather as a cultural-philosophical one (through the image of fate as text). As a result of the study, it is noted that Borges, rejecting the Newtonian concept of the universe, relies on a concept of time that is close to Einstein's notions of the relativity of time and the correlation between time and space. The Jungian theory of the collective unconscious and archetypes has also had a significant impact on him. The writer comes to the understanding of the nonlinear character of human destiny. The images of fate created by Borges also reflect his interest in the foundations of human culture. For the writer, fate is a text written in a book stored in a library. The relationship to one's own fate is a hermeneutical procedure of understanding the text.
