Gender equity in clinical training and residency remains a persistent challenge across the world. Even with the rising number of women in medicine, leadership roles, wage gaps, and specialty representation continue to be unfairly dispersed between the genders. This article reviews structural biases for selection in residency programs that affect professional advancement and compensation issues, highlighting gender discrimination in different global contexts. It mentions several societal and institutional barriers to career advancement for female physicians within these contexts. A series of solutions, such as mentorship and sponsorship opportunities, gender-blind applications to residency, and patient-education campaigns, are suggested to bridge this gap. With analysis drawn from North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the study comparatively illustrates the way gender inequities in medicine play out in different regions.
