Purpose. This is the first attempt to make a systematic study of Japanese morphophonemics on a synchronic level. As such, it is a result of the application of recently developed techniques of language analysis to a large and only partially explored body of data. Japanese is a language with a long literary history and a considerable tradition of native grammatical analysis. The present-day language represents not only an accumulated native development, but also a prodigious assimilation of words borrowed from various sources at different periods.
