Abstract The evolution of museum lighting guidelines and the characteristics of 15 guidelines are examined with regard to the increasing emphasis on a balance between cultural heritage preservation and accessibility, considering the objects‘ materials and cultural significance, the visitor’s visual abilities, the presentation environment, the number of light sensitivity categories, illuminance levels, exposure limits, challenges in determining lightfastness, and the future of lighting in the age of big data and AI.
