Abstract: This essay examines the theological foundations and development of catechist formation as presented in the Directory for Catechesis . Tracing its evolution across the 1971, 1997, and 2020 catechetical directories, it highlights the Church's growing insistence that "the formation of catechists requires particular attention" because pastoral effectiveness depends on those who carry it out. Drawing on the Directory's Trinitarian, Christocentric, and pneumatological vision, the article presents formation as an interior transformation guided by the Holy Spirit, beyond instructional training. It further explores the kerygmatic and ecclesial dimensions of formation, emphasizing missionary discipleship, communal learning, and practical accompaniment. By outlining principles, criteria, and dimensions of formation, the essay provides a framework for shaping programs that form catechists as credible witnesses who serve the Church's evangelizing mission.
